From where you live Whilton Mill, Shenington and Rissington are all within easy travel distance. At 8 years old you will be looking at the cadet class and you have three choices - comer, wtp and honda. Ideally you should visit the tracks and chat to cadet parents/drivers before you spend any money. Rissington has a meeting this weekend and saturday is your best day as it is practice and everyone will have more time to chat with you. Comer engines are the most popular at all of these circuits and tend to be quickest at Rissington and Whilton but can also be by far the most expensive if you get caught up in the `silly money' engines (new - about £600 but anything up to £18k used!). Comer tends to be more popular because it is the engine used for the British Championships and all others have to be restricted to keep them a fraction slower. I believe that the engine comes up for tender for 2012 so it is possible things will change. WTP engines are electric start (comer are pull start) so useful in the early stages if your lad spins/stalls as he will be able to restart. These engines are no longer being made and so the future of the class must be in some boubt but that should also mean some good bargains to be had - worth considering for the learning period. Honda are generally considered to be the cheapest to run and very reliable. They just do not seem as popular in your area. Ideally get down to Rissington on Saturday and chat away.
