You will find you need a lot more than 5 sessions to get on the pace of kids who have raced a few times. The last 2 or 3 seconds are the second hardest to find next to the last 1/2 second.
Don't be deceived by what looks like pure straight line performance difference. Different gearing could account for this, but even on identical gearing, set-up or the exit speed two corners back could look like the same thing. Even after 3 years racing, last weekend we were tearing our hair out because it looked like the competition had arrived with a monster engine. The difference seemed to be solely on the straight, where they were taking 3 lengths out us, but we eventually discovered we had gone completely wrong with the set-up and we weren't getting the drive out of the previous complex. It took us nearly all day to sort this, just in time for the final, which we were able to win.
