They simulate racing rather well but the driving aspect is not even close. In terms of learning driving technique they're of limited value. You can learn the main concepts (racing lines, braking points, smoothness etc) but sim racing and real racing are so far removed in terms of the driving that the skill set cannot really transfer.

Will there come a time when the sims are close enough? Probably and maybe they already are at the high end.

So far as flight simulators go, I understand the commercial and military simulators are more for learning the avionics and in-flight procedures than on-the-limit flying?
