No, it doesn't need to be bent..... unless somehting else (e.g, the fuel tank) is in the way.
You can easily remove it and 'knee it' (put it on two blocks and apply your knee, GENTLY) until it's straighter.
For precision, I haven't seen a kart WITHOUT 'Ackerman steering' since the 1950s! It refers to the way that the INNER wheel turns FURTHER inward than the OUTER wheel when you turn the steering. Without some of that effect, the kart won't handle half as well.
People (in karting) have been refering to 'Ackerman' Steering' when they really mean ADJUSTABLE 'ackerman steering'; i.e., you can alter the AMOUNT by which one wheel turns in more than the other.
