You have to remember that I have seen 50 YEARS worth of kart crashes. 99.9% of them have NOT included neck braces and 99.999% of accidents, the drivers have walked away. That would imply that neck braces are NOT necessary! However, it is NOT proof!
Karting IS basically pretty safe; GOOD!
What the three of us are trying to warn you is that there is NO PROOF that wearing a neck brace is good for you.
There is an argument which says that the neck brace MIGHT CAUSE injury. The helmet get's 'levered' against it in certain accidents and that might INCREASE the neck forces! There's no PROOF of that, either!
The best examples I can give you are from cycling. People knew the accident rate before cycle crash helmts became common. Cycle helmets LOOK like common sense and they have become VERY widely used. You'd therefore it would seem reasonable to think that the number of injuries per mile, per cyclist, etc. etc. would have reduced..... however.... that is NOT the case!
The figures show something different.... YES.... serious head injuries have reduced a fraction BUT.... the number of serious and VERY serious neck injuries have I*N*C*R*E*A*S*E*D! At the moment, even safety groups are saying that the 'decision' on cycle helmets is OPEN!
What looks like good sense may NOT be!
While no-one else seems to KNOW any better, then YOU (the parent) should decide what he wears. BUT.... you should do so knowing that there IS NO PROOF that wearing a brace does ANY good and it's even possible that it does HARM. Nobody KNOWS! Just don't do it ASSUMING that he's safer!
