A kart has no differential, so the steering is set-up to lighten the load on the inside rear so that it will slide more easily, allowing the kart to corner properly.

In ideal situations you should not need to lean, but sometimes you may need to lean out to increase this effect, or lean in to keep the wheel on the ground.

It is particularly useful in the wet when you have less grip to allow the steering to do the work. Other occasions are where a set-up doesn't suit a particular corner, or you get some damage that twists the chassis (where you can lean in in one direction, out on the other).
