Just start it on the floor, put a bit of 4x4 under the back to lift the rear wheels off the ground, put a strap round your rear tyre, foot on the rear bumper and pull, once its started knock it back into neutral, remove wood and get into it. If your carb wont let it idle on its own just lift the throttle cable out of the top of the carb slightly (ie hand throttle style).

Don't start it on the stand, its not worth the risk and its not expensive to get a bit of timber
