Ahhhhh.....
There ARE ways of doing it safely!
Depending on the engine, it MAY be possible to fit a Kick Starter (from a MotorBike engine). Obviously, that depends on the engine.
Next..... there used to be a bloke at Kimbolton (only a couple of years ago), who had made an EXCELLENT external electric starter. He used it on his 125cc. His kart had an exposed clucth and he fitted a 'plate' to that clutch and inserted a starter motor INTO the adaptor plate. He'#d dealt with all the problems of the 'correct' rotation and gearing. If yours has an external clutch or exposed crank-end, then he may be able to do somtehing for you.
I can't remember his name (Mike? Possibly) but, if you ask the 125cc and/or 250cc at Kim, they will know, I am sure.
It IS possible to start with a 'strap' but, at the VERY minimum, you should still use 2 or 3 assistants to hold the kart anfd the brakes. Any less and you'll pull the kart off your stand and run over the rest people in the pits as it HAS To0 be in-gear to start it that way! It's still simply BONKERS but......
Finally.......
The single most impressive measure I have ever seen was a guy called Roger White (short and fat!), who was knocked off in a heat in a 250 International (twin cylinder Rotax) at Kimbolton. He leapt out, banged it into 1st or 2nd, picked up the rear with his left hand, held the steering with his right hand and did a PROPER 100cc-kart-bump-start. Once it fired, he leaped in and carried on with the race.....
Of course, OUR generation was a lot tougher than THIS feeble lot today anbd thus I doubt any of you could now manage that!
However, we'd also never confused Mickey Mouse leisure kart engines with electric starters (simply STUNNINGLY wimpy) with RACE karts.....
Still: I am just an old fool and thus, what do I know....?
