After six days it should be discharged and you sometimes find that one of the cells goes to zero, so that the battery may measure below 2.4 v (2x1.2v)

I presume your meter is accurate? Have you tested it on something like a new 1.5 battery that'll measure about 1.6v.

I don't actually know if the transponder circuitry 'unhooks' from the battery once it reaches a certain level.
