Alan, point taken but..... It's the proposed purpose that I disagree with. The TV coverage is a separate thing by all accounts, but there is little evidence of an upside in the promotional sense. Yes, great fun to watch later but I see no queue of sponsors outside the door.
People have mentioned camera use in football and rugby but that only works because there are only 2 sides. In our sport there are sometimes 30. I don't believe it will work logistically and it's just another thing to worry about. As I am the mechanic, guardian etc (although I don't have to make the tea) my main enemy when racing is time. So paying lots of money for something you don't really want which wastes time is not top of my wish list. But that is just my opinion. The fact is it's pay up or clear off.
As I said before we have used onboard cameras within the team - you can use split screen comparisons with different drivers to see where time is gained or lost, even spot a setup problem so they do have their uses.
The irony is that most times we tried to use the helmet mounted one we were not allowed to. This always seemed strange to me as there was apparently no restriction on videoing from outside of the track. Unsafe I suppose.
So my main beef is being forced to pay for something I don't want. What's new?
Regards, Mr. Grumpy.
