Thanks for all the (mostly) positive comments!
I can fully understand why some people think we're expensive but as several people pointed out; it's the finishing details that make a difference. We also run the business as a professional company running from premises and we're mostly competing with painters who are working from home with much lower (ie: no!) overheads. The profit margin we make is probably not that much different from the profit per helmet other painters are making. We pay for a solvents license which means we can still use the far superior (but much more expensive) solvent-based paints. Most painters now use water-based which is cheaper and (in our opinion) lower-quality. We've invested thousands in new equipment, techniques, the latest paints and countless hours coming up with new ideas and styles. We then get our designs copied by painters not willing to put in the hours. One guy even copy & pasted the entire text from our website... another painter has almost an entire gallery on his site that has designs all copied from ones on ours.
Lloyd Miller (24 hour record holder) will have his Gillard kart at Kartmania and he'll have a few of our helmets on his stand (if we meet up in time tonight to give him the helmets!). One of the helmets is a Gorillaz-themed helmet with the charachters painted over hand-painted grafitti. The whole job took around 50 hours and anybody at the Show is welcome to have a look close-up to see where their money goes when we paint a helmet.
