Given that the ABkC AGM is being helt at Kartmania this month, I have just e-mailed the following to Russell Anderson (ABkC Chairman) and Graham Smith (ABkC Secretary)....

Mr Anderson and Mr Smith,

I appreciate and applaud your article Cadet Front Fairing, in the ABkC October 2009 newsletter.

Over the last few months at race meets, and through karter’s internet forums there has been much debate regarding the Cadet Front fairing. A measure of the karting community’s frustrations on these matters has culminated in an on-line petition, soon to be presented to the MSA.

Safety & the Zip Storm Nose Cone www.gopetition.co.uk/online/31895.html

Some six days into the petiton there are 130 signatures. Given the size of the Cadet class in the UK (number of MSA licensed drivers) this is already a significant sign-up.

Please be aware of the petition’s objectives and (example) signatory’s comments; for example;

No.3 This nosecone did not meet the MSA regs and was allowed through a waiver. It has caused several accidents (I have witnessed at least 3). It was clearly only allowed to line the pockets of Zip Kart as other legal nosecones were available. It is a disgrace that profit is valued higher than childrens safety by both Zip Kart and the MSA. This needs nosecone needs banning before a child loses his/her life.

No.24 we run an intrepid not a zip but have had a head on collision with a zip at PFI, where my lad mounted the zip and was stuck on top of the other kart, just like recently at rissington. they were both lucky as my lad was only going about 10mph out of the first hairpin. i sign this petition i support of having the nosecone banned. rest assured if my lad is injured due to non action of all parties, i will peruse litigation as we do not run this Illegal (non compliant) nosecone.thank you.

No.42 Witnessed a friend flipping at Midland champs at Rissy in September Broken collarbone but otherwise very lucky.This has dragged on for far to long and needs sorting immediately.

No.44 My son was involved in a serious accident at Clay Pigeon this June (Reported to John Ryan at MSA)as a direct result of a ZIP nosecone.He broke his collarbone and he was lucky it was just that.Please ban the zip nosecone and get them to use the proper alternative which can be bought for £15.I don't care if it is approved,there is no way it legally should have been approved according to criteria in the bluebook.I think someone at the MSA is having too many golf days/ holidays courtesy of MR HINES

No.46 My daughter was involved in an incident this season where her kart turned over having hit the front of another kart. She suffered a broken collar bone.

No.55 I manage 6 Cadets and over the last year i have seen over 20 Cadet drivers fliped when they had hit a ZIP storm front nose cone. Most times the Zip has spun and is facing the wrong way on the track. Every Cadet dad knows they are a danger and they need banning. I have emailed the MSA several times about this but nothing is ever done. And most of the time they choose not to even reply.

No.66 my son races in cadet in a BRM and i was first on the scence at the accident at rissy on sunday. i was watching in horror as the zip kart spun and another kart just drove up the front of him i think only the steering wheel stopped him having his head taken off

No.69 Why do they ban the chassis protector immediately but the safety of children is secondary to commercial inerests.

No.101 I urge the MSA to issue a temporary ban on shovel noses until their investigations are completed. During 2009 I have seen many on-track incidents across all karting classes. Cadets seem to be disprortionately a) being lifted and flipped, or b) sliding high onto the nassau panel via near head-on collisions. My son has been involved in two incidents where he has been lifted by nosecone shovelling. Our cadet nose fairing is Eurostar Mini, having a partial flat front

No.112 This petition clearly shows the wave of public opinion on the inherent risks with the design of the ZIP Storm front fairing. Following my son's accident in FKS @ PFI where he sustained a broken collarbone there was always doubt about the contribution to his barrel roll from the nose of the spun ZIP he hit. We sought an alternative and we fitted the option from Dartford Karting for his return race and have since negotiated a discount from DK for all who quote THR on their order.

No.122 The only way the MSA will get more evidence for the dangers of the zip nosecone is by more of our children to be involved in accidents this cannot be allowed to happen.
