axle supported on 2 thin bars at ends and slightly thinner bar in centre. Bathroom scales on top of axle, bottle jack ontop of scales, something very heavy on top of bottle jack (car, van, house). operate jack until central bar starts to nip under flexing axle. Take reading on scales, smallest reading is softest!
