Just measure the diameter of the axle at the end,just remove the hub,as david said axles range from 25mm for cadet karts right up to 50mm.
As yours is a gearbox kart it'll have 30mm maybe 35mm,the newer chassis use 40mm/50mm hollow axles but as your restoring an old chassis then its safe to assume you have the 30/35mm.
According to you profile your in Blackpool,i just googled bearing and transmission near blackpool and looked on the very first listing,a very quick searh on their site i found what appears to be axle bearings lol! Have a look....

If you cant find what you need or are struggling to measure them then pop down to said shop with bearing in hand and let them measure for you.
