Just use the scales as it is the simplist way and work really well. You do want the floor as level as possible but shimming is a bit over the top as most floors are all good.
Two scales are fine or blocks the same height to level it out.
Check stubs first before starting so that things are right before worrying about the weight as this can have quite a effect on it.
