On practice days you can do prettu much what you like so lonk as your driver is wearing some dort of race suit and helmet - same with kart and fuel. It is only when you go through scrutineering that your kart and equipment have to comply with MSA regulations. No idea what rules apply if you run at non-MSA tracks. So, yes, you could go on the auction sites for a helmet but you need to be careful and make sure the helmet is a good fit. The fit does vary and that is the advantage of going to a dealer with a wide range. My lad tried on several different makes/models all with the same size mark but the fits varied considerably. If you go down the used route I would only buy from someone you know and trust as damage is not always obvious. I still have an Arai SK5 on the shelf that was declared a write-off after my lad flipped but the damage is not that obvious and could probably be easily concealed. It may well still be OK but not worth the risk.
