This 'small price to pay' business is akin to brain washing. You're not paying for extra safety, you're paying for fashion and brand name. This used to be a choice, now it seems it's to become compulsary.
I've got 4 helmets between my two kids, two meet the current standards for racing and two don't for practice. Because they were end of line and in hard to sell size XS, the four cost me £140 altogether. The're not cheaply made helmets, all modern helmets have to meet minimum stringent safety standards. The only difference is the're not the latest and greatest designs and colour schemes with a big brand name on them. Ironically one of the reasons they were so heavily discounted is they are plain colours, which is what I wanted.
IMO this whole helmet thing has got out of hand now. I've said it before but how can paying a fiver to try karting be reconciled with having to pay £400+ for a lid if you get the bug?
