well i was always told when i started that your looking at about 2000 pounds to get yourself up and running, say 1000 for the kart, 400 for a helmet, suit, gloves, boots etc, 100 for tools etc and 500 for a trailer.

those a very rough guides to get you started, you can spend more (although for your first season you shouldnt need to) or less, but you have to be careful on the machinary or racewear you get, its a balancing act between speed/ reliability and lookin after your sons head!

as everyone has said on here the best thing to do, is do your research, go to your local track, take your son with you, ask questions from other racers, then go with the general consensus.

in terms of the kart, make sure its within the rules, nothin worse than getin a kart that is out of spec that you cant race, but dont go for something new, you lad WILL crash his first kart, mainly small spins or light taps into the tyre wall, but if the kart does get damaged, it will be cheaper to replace.

if i were you id spend the next few months spending some time doing research on everything from tools, the kart, racewear, trailer etc, get all the costs factored in like tyres, practice/ race costs, the arks test etc, then buy it as a nice christmas preseant!...that way you can spend the new year testing ready for the start of the 2010 season
