To use a retail analogy, Stars is a product competing in a finite market along with S1 et al.

We can all recall the TV Motors series that ended before it had almost started. A case of nice concept but...

The challenge for any series is to make itself attractive to the paying punter and there are only so many ways you can do that.

If you're a business then you can:

1. be the cheapest which works until someone undercuts you and even if they don't, will you attract the clientele you want to attract?

2: offer a product that is totally unique compared with others and therefore attracts customers to that product. That's good and the trick is to keep it fresh and exciting otherwsie after a while people will drift

3: differentiate in terms of the product offerings which might be a collection of price, packaging/promotion, benefits or prizes to all of us etc

As someone who again has only done S1, Stars appears to be trying to do 2 and 3 and that's to be applauded because if it copies the S1 format verbatim then where is the incentive for people to switch or do both?

So a glossy web site, links with Bernie/F1, different formats, different prizes, european series etc - are all good ideas if they are implemented ok.

If I was a member of the Stars management team then the first thing I wouldn't do is reply via this forum although that may come later. I'd sit down and identify and go through what's working well versus what isn't and what needs to change. I'd be amazed if they had not already done that or were considering doing it.

But from the sounds of it they're probably too late in some cases and are going to lose customers from this year and others may be put off.

Which is a shame because with a few tweaks they might be close bearing in mind you can never make 100% of the people 100% happy.

In the case of S1 I don't ever think it will try and position itself in the same glitzy image as Stars because it doesn't need to. Recent changes have made it better and while further improvements will no doubt be made, the 'don't fix it if it ain't broken' comes to mind.
