Well, DON'T put anything flamable in it.

Don't leave things in it too long as it can re attract the very grime that you've carefully removed.

There are specific fluids available and I use a non acidic stuff called 'Lightening'

I've used washing detergent too.

Have a Google.

Don't leave the part in the fluid with the machine off.

I wash the item thouroughly in hot running water after, then spray with WD40 and let it drain.

I spray with carb/brake cleaner before re assembly and then lightly re spray with WD40 before storing.

If you leave detergent traces they can emulsify with the petroil mixture and expand to block jets.
