It was a lot easier.
Your pit space was an area about 1.5m by 1.5m behind the boot of your car. The paddock was very compact and you didn't have far to go to get to the dummy grid.
A 100cc kart with a light engine like a McCulloch would weigh just over 50kg. Get one of light French karts that were available and you could pick it up and carry it under one arm.
There was also the technical method of removing the spark plug and pushing it along the ground (and then wondering why there was a strong smell of petrol and the kart refused to start).
Some models had drop in seats. This meant you could whip the seat out and rest it on the pedals, step into the space where the seat used to be, bend the knees and grab hold a chassis rail in each hand and march off like a self drive sedan chair.
Besides being lighter the old karts had no front overhang, so the easiest method was just to drag it along by the back bumper
