Andrew there were two methods of getting the kart from your pit space to the dummy grid before the advent of the trolley.
1. My father used to call it 'stretcher bearing' and I think no further explanation is required !
2. Balancing the kart on the front wheel... as in the link below. This is the late Vivion Daly, brother of ex-F1 driver Derek Daly, returning his kart to the Mondello paddock in around 1981/1982.

All I can say is be thankful that you've done your karting in an era when you didn't need to manhandle it around the place. If you had a paddock pitch a long way from the dummy grid - and a dad who took the light end, the day would be really exhausting !
