Yes there is a technique. Its quite hard to explain but using long nose pliers (with good grip, but not too harsh) you have to force the open end into the centre of the hole and then pivot it in without it pinging back out (Be careful not to push it in too far as you'll bend the clip too much. Pivot the pliers so that the nose falls into the little cut-out on the right-hand side of the hole. As I say its hard to explain but after a few goes its quite easy and you'll leave no marks.
There is a tool you can buy but you'll probably have to snip the ends of the clip so that it can compress as it slides down the taper, which isnt really a good idea!
