It was certainly an unfortunate episode, and many apologies. The driver can only proceed slowly without stopping on the 'chicken run' if waved on by the Clerk, otherwise must stop and check. When he came in I doubt if the true facts were known.

(The 'chicken run' is the long standing name given to the route from the circuit into scrutineering / weighbridge, which has an exit onto the circuit so that repairs can be safely made before rejoining the race.)
