Who says bike racers don't use them? I always used them for 3 reasons - 1. In case a massive bug splat attack happened which would mess up your vision / concentration for the rest of the race 2. As I raced 2 strokes mostly the cloud of oil rich fumes, especially at the start would leave small oil spots on your visor that refused to come off with a light wipe and messed up your vision esp if it rained. 3. Arai race visors don't (didn't?) have the antiscratch coating that road versions do, so after half a dozen cleans were hazed, so it was a lot cheaper to replace tear off than visors. It is a personal preference thing though. My son likes them, but not all do. I should think you could buy optical grade acetate from a decent craft / design shop (e.g. where student architects go to buy stuff for their models - there is one or more near any Uni) Might not work out much less expensive than the real deal though!
