I know not everyone on this forum will agree with me, but have you thought about gearbox karts? I was the same age and similar height and weight to you when I started in 250 National. The significantly higher power of gearbox karts compared to Rotax or TKM means weight and height is not so much of a dissadvantage. Yes they are much faster, more expensive to buy new (though you should be able to buy a reasonable second-hand starter outfit with spares for around £1,500 - £2,000). Some would say gearbox karts are more difficult to set up and maintain. However whilst there some obvious differences such as a gearbox (which are bombproof on a 250 and require no special maintenance apart from the occasional oil change), a clutch pedal and brakes at the front as well as the rear, there is not really any significant difference in the mechanical knowledge required compared to any other type of kart.
If you are close to Fulbeck, you should go along to the next race meeting (usually 4th Sunday in the month) and talk to the 250 guys. I guarantee once you try one, nothing else will ever come close! Another benefit - you wont have to worry about keeping up with your son!
