Back in the "Good old days", every class had its own british championship event awarding No. 1 to the winner. When most of these were scrapped (one of the msa's most idiotic decisions) the winner of the commercial series championships took the No. 1 plate. Due to public demand, the abkc reintroduced an event for those that wanted a single meeting championship like the old British championship but since the No. 1 was already taken, adopted the 0 (zero) plate, that had previously been given in the 1970's to drivers who had won a world championship.
