My comment about the 'grip' levels were based on my (limited) experience of my son's racing. I have no idea what anything feels like because I don't drive them! However, I do change a lot of wheels and tyres and certain patterns emerge. We make use of 4 different types of wheels: Aluminum, Douglas, OTK MXP, OTK full mags. Different wheels seem to suit different chassis in various conditions, but I think they are a major tuning aid, particularly when you don't wish to alter the frame set-up.
I am sure that the mag wheels we use are stiffer ie less flexible and the effect always seems to be to 'soften' the handling. They also seem to allow you to run with lower pressures but I'm not sure why - perhaps it is something to do with different tyre contact? Still, what works, works.
