We had a bloke did an engine change from rotary to reed, forgot he'd done it and choked the motor in practice. Despite the presence of the obligatory plastic strip (this one had an integral sprocket guard as well), he managed to get a finger meshed twixt engine sprocket and chain. This crudely removed the tip of the digit which we found about half an hour later still in the finger of the glove out on track.

The current chainguards may be a pain, but we've not lost any digits since so, on the grounds of safety, they work.

Jury still out on neck braces, so best left to personal choice.
