...and use the plastic ones rather than the metal ones. The metal ones can fold over in an impact with something whereas the plastic ones spring back to their original position. We endurance race and use a thick one (kerb rider) on one side and a thin one on the other and have never had a chain jump off or a sprocket damaged through impact.

You can cut the thinner one to put it on the inside, but you're better off removing the sprocket carrier and doing it properly. Don't cut a kerb rider - it'll lose it's strength.
