You are not onto anything new. by altering the pinch bolt torque on the bearing carrier you can influence the axle stiffness. It is very useful when time is tight to try running with the pinch bolt tight if you want to try a harder axle or loose a softer one.
As you have noted the eyeball action of the bearing in the carrier will allow the bearing to move freely if the clamp is loose allowing the axle to arc over its entire length or less so when tight.
