I haven't read the article about the cycle helmets that Ian's posted fully, but I will. My best friend at secondary school was killed instantly one Friday afternoon in 1986 when he went over the handlebars of his bicycle slowly in the simplest accident you could imagine. It's a tragedy I would never wish on anybody and its deeply affected me to this day. While I don't know what the outcome might have been had he been wearing a cycle helmet, for sure it could not have been any worse.

I agree with Ian that its important to understand how a safety device works and be convinced that it will help rather than hinder you should you need to rely on it in the event of an accident.
