Alfano download pen error

I've just purchased the download pen for an alfano pro, and, after a fair bit of fiddling, have managed to get my laptop to recognise the pen through a serial/USB adapter.

I've then followed what i believe to be the correct proceedure to download information from the alfano (in alfano vue follow File > reading chrono > start scan, then find the 'print' section on the alfano, press the right button and hold the pen over the LED, which i assume is the one between the two buttons).

Numbers then count up on the screen of the alfano and the laptop, but seem to do so at different rates, however the main problem is that an error message appears with 'run time error 8020: error reading comm device.' Does anyone know what this might mean? Any help would be greatly appreciated, im going slowly insane here!
