Funny you mention church bells.
One of the best things about living in France and one of the few really positive things one can say about the French as a nation is their live and let live attitude especially when it comes to noise.
As a lately come to karting, petrol head I have had race bikes and quads which I have tested on local roads and recently an engine dyno in the barn. I live in a village and have never had any problems with complaints about noise (except from ex-pats), how many UK villages would let you get away with that????
Over the years the only people who ever moan about noise are Brit ex-pats, one of whom, soon after their arrival, had the church bells stopped at night. Despite buying a house literally in the shadow of the church tower they made such a fuss about the bells, that have rung through the night on the hour for generations, that they now stop at 9pm. Other ex-pats had the Gendarmes out for a noisy wedding party in the village hall and were arrested themselves for wasting police time (the groom and best man were Gendarmes. lol)
For the first time this year our kart track has had to stop between 12 & 2pm during July and August. Why? Because of complaints from Brit holiday makers at the local campsite.
