Exactly.
All a foam ring does is protect the collar bone.
The solid type are a different kettle of fish.
I see it like this,push your head to one side and it rests on your shoulder,now put a tin of beans up against your neck and then push your head to one side,the tin acts as a lever on the neck this is exactly what i believe the solid braces would do, making it more likely to result in a bad neck injury.
Remember the hans device BOLTS your head to your shoulders,the karting type do nothing of the sort.
